I think it would be great to have our thinking stimulated by heritage groups investigating other ideas, tools, and practices. We would love to be able to do an investigation of best practices and how they could apply here.

We have a wonderful culture of groups who stimulate discussion in Vancouver and we have no shortage of ideas. We get lots of ideas about quick fixes that people believe will solve all our problems. The planning profession is filled with quick fix failures.

What we need to do is embrace the complexity of things and take the time to find good solutions to hard questions. We need the capacity to study ideas and analyze whether an idea or some component of the idea or approach to the idea could work in our system and under what circumstances, and test our assumptions.
